Romans 5:3-5 (NLT) We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

I gave my son a burrito the other day and he started eating it…from the middle. There is an obvious reason most people start eating burritos at one end; starting in the middle makes a big mess!

In our spiritual walk we often want to skip to the middle: past the “problems and trials” and the development of “endurance.” We want to skip to the good stuff. But each step we take leads us to the next step, and we won’t become spiritually mature without each of those steps. If the beginning seems daunting, remember Paul’s reassurance, that God has “given us the Holy Spirit” to encourage us at each step!
