Romans 5:3-5 (NLT) We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

I have a friend who likes to refer to difficulties in life as “character building.” She doesn’t say she “had a bad day” she’ll say it was a “character building day.” But just because she recognizes that “problems and trials” develop “strength of character” doesn’t mean she enjoys it!

So next time you have a “character building day” remember that Paul followed this verse with a reminder of “how dearly God loves us.” He loved us enough to send His Son to die for us; surely he can love us through the character building days, too.
