God Always Loved Me

Isaiah 44:24 (KJV) Thus saith the Lord, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the Lord that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;

Our relationship with God comes much later than His with us. We sometimes forget that He created us in His image long before our parents were born. His love for us already existed while we were being formed in our mother’s womb.

Families can get a small glimpse of what God knows with the high-resolution sonogram technology today. We as parents, grandparents and siblings can already feel love for a baby as it’s forming in the womb but must wait to know it until birth.

God knows us from the womb and loves us in spite of the disappointments He knows we will bring Him, but through grace provided by His Son, Jesus Christ we can be the apple of His eye.

God is Great!

Oh Really?

“Instead, by speaking the truth in a spirit of love, we must grow up in every way to Christ, who is the head.” Ephesians 4:15 (GNT)

John Wesley was a great English preacher of the 1700's. He was considered a rather spiffy dresser. One Sunday morning he wore a bow tie that had long ribbons that hung downward. After the sermon was over a lady walked up to him and said, "Brother Wesley, are you open to some criticism?"

He said, "I guess so. What would you like to criticize?" She said, "The ribbons on your tie are entirely too long and inappropriate for a man of God." And she took out her scissors and cut them off.

A hush fell over the people standing there as Wesley calmly asked, "Now may I borrow the scissors for a moment?" As she handed them to him, he said, "Ma'am, are you open to some criticism?" She answered, "Well, I suppose I am." He said, "All right then, please stick out your tongue."

“I may speak in different languages, whether human or even of angels. But if I don’t have love, I am only a noisy bell or a ringing cymbal.” 1 Corinthians 13:1 (ERV)

Remember?

Have you heard about the man who moved into a retirement community to spend the rest of his life there? It wasn't long until he had made a number of friends among the other residents. There was one lady he was especially attracted to, and she was attracted to him, also. So they spent a lot of time together. Finally one evening he proposed, asking her to marry him.

The next morning he woke up remembering his proposal, but he couldn't remember her answer. So he went to her and said, "I'm really embarrassed. I proposed to you last night but I can't remember if you said `Yes' or `No."' "Oh, thank goodness!" she replied. "I remembered saying `Yes' but I couldn't remember who asked me."

“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14 (NIV)

Lord Jesus, this is Dennis, thank you for the ability to remember that You always love me. Thank You for forgiving and casting my sins into the sea of forgetfulness. I love You.

Listening?

Rev. 3:20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and eat with you. And you will eat with me.

There’s a story about an older woman who ran out of money. She couldn’t pay her rent. She couldn’t pay any of her bills. The landlord had threatened to throw her out if she didn’t soon pay her rent. She had only a candle to keep her warm, and on Christmas Day she warmed her hands over the candle. There was a knocking at her door and she was afraid to answer for fear that it was the landlord coming to kick her out. She blew out her candle and sat quietly in the dark and waited for the intruder to leave. Weeks later, after she lost her house, she found out that the knocking on her door was the knock of a friend who had come to bring her enough money to pay her rent and pay her debts.

I wonder how many how many times the gentle Savior has knocked on our door desiring to come in and free us from the burdens of our sin, and to lift the burden we’re carrying, but sadly, we have ignored His knocking?

Lord Jesus, this is Dennis, my greatest fear is that my heart will be hardened so that it won’t be tender toward You and the Holy Spirit. I need you desperately to daily speak to me through Your word and by Your Spirit!

Are We There Yet?

I don’t mean that I am exactly what God wants me to be. I have not yet reached that goal. But I continue trying to reach it and make it mine. That’s what Christ Jesus wants me to do. It is the reason he made me his. Brothers and sisters, I know that I still have a long way to go. But there is one thing I do: I forget what is in the past and try as hard as I can to reach the goal before me. I keep running hard toward the finish line to get the prize that is mine because God has called me through Christ Jesus to life up there in heaven. James 3:12-14 (ERV)

I love reading after the Apostle Paul; he never forgot where he came from, but he never let it slow him down in his quest of faith. “I’m not yet where God wants me to be, but I’m after that goal.” He continues with “I’ve still got a long way to go.” How about you?

Lord Jesus, this is Dennis, thank you for forgiving my sins, so now I can look ahead in faith, instead of beating myself up for my past. Thank you for paying for my sins on Calvary’s cross. I love You.

To Tell the Truth

What good is it, dear brothers and sister, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? —James 2:14 (NLT)

“The only Bible some people read is the one you live.” —Author unknown

Lord Jesus, this is Dennis, I want to be a mirror reflecting Your glory and grace to a needy world. I need help!

Faith and Problems Go Together? Part 2

James 1:2-3 "Consider it pure joy... whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance."

If I want to learn to live by faith I must learn to rejoice continually. James says "Consider it all joy when you go through problems." Notice he doesn’t say be thankful for the problems. God doesn’t expect you to thank Him for bad things in your life. Like if you get cancer you don’t say "Thank You God, for this cancer." Of course not. It says, be thankful in the problem. I must learn to rejoice in the situation continually if I’m going to learn to live by faith.

If you were to evaluate how you do when problems test your faith, where would you be on a scale from one to ten? How quickly do I praise God when things go wrong? If you say "never," you rate yourself down at the bottom, a "1." If you say "Sometimes I thank God, I praise God in the problem," you get a "5." If you say, "I always do it. It’s my habit to continually rejoice when I’m dealing with a difficulty because I know God will help me." You get a "10."

The Bible says "Rejoice in the Lord always [That means all the time] And again I say rejoice," because God uses difficulties. And He tests our faith and He builds it not in the easy times of life but in the difficult times.

Lord Jesus, this is Dennis, I feel like that guy in the Bible who said, “I believe, help my unbelief.” (Mark 9:34)

Faith and Problems Go Together?

James 1:2-3 "Consider it pure joy... whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance."

He says when you’ve got a problem, relax. In fact, he says, rejoice. Take it easy. Thank God. Praise God. Why? Because I know that God is with me. God has a plan for me. He has a purpose for my life and He’s going to help me through it. God’s purpose is greater than the pain or the problem or the difficulty I’m going through right now.

The lesson is: If I want to learn to live by faith I must learn to rejoice continually.

Lord Jesus, this is Dennis. Thank You for the things you have taught me through difficulties that have come my way. My faith is stronger because of them. I love You.

Pop Quiz!

Did you ever come to class and hear the teacher say, “Put away everything but your pencil, we’re going to have a pop quiz today.” The idea was to see if you had done your assignment or been paying attention to your class work. The test was to let you and the teacher know if you were learning.

God knows how much faith I have. He knows if it’s real. I, on the other hand, am good at thinking I have more trust than I really do.

The next day we would get our graded test and invariably my momma would ask, “How did you do on your test today?”

Job 7:17-18 "What is man that You make so much of him and that You give him so much attention and that You examine him every morning and test him every moment."

"Test him." Did you realize that God is testing you every moment of your life? The truth is that life itself is a test, and it is a temporary assignment, and it’s a trust. These are the facts of life. Every moment of the day your faith is being tested. In fact all this past week it was tested and all this next week your faith is going to be tested.

So, I have a question for you. How did you do on your test today?

Lord Jesus, this is Dennis. My saying and my doing ain’t matching up, Thank you for Your grace and forgiveness. I’m looking forward to learning how to be more like You, thanks for being so patient. I love You.

Faith Comes By Hearing

Proverbs 2:6-10 (ERV) The LORD is the source of wisdom; knowledge and understanding come from his mouth. He gives good advice to honest people and shields those who do what is right. He makes sure that people are treated fairly. He watches over his loyal followers. If you listen to him, you will understand what is just and fair and how to do what is right. You will gain wisdom, and knowledge will bring you joy.

Lord Jesus, this is Dennis. Because of the faith You placed in my heart, I came to You today ready to listen and obey Your Word and the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

I care not today what the morrow may bring,

If shadow or sunshine or rain,

The Lord I know ruleth o’er everything,

And all of my worries are vain.

Living by faith in Jesus above,

Trusting, confiding in His great love;

From all harm safe in His sheltering arm,

I’m living by faith and feel no alarm.

-James Wells
