Philippians 4:13 NKJV “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

I can’t chop onions. I have always said this, but today I needed to chop onions for the recipe I was making and I didn’t want to wait to start dinner until my husband got home. So I arrogantly thought I could handle it, I would just use the food chopper to make it go quickly. Well, five seconds in my eyes started to water, 15 seconds in my nose started to run, after 30 seconds I couldn’t see straight and I started to think “this was a terrible idea!” I had to throw away half the onion because I couldn’t take it any longer! Then I decided to open up the back door to let some fresh air in, and my toddler used the opportunity to escape, and the dog stole his pacifier! So it is official, I cannot chop onions!

Philippians 4:13 is often used out of context. It doesn’t say “I can do everything I set my mind to.” It doesn’t say “I will accomplish everything I pray about.”  Per verse 12, Paul is saying through Christ’s strength, he has learned to be content in all circumstances, whether he is full or hungry. Christ’s strength allows us to keep going, through all things.

Sometimes my “can do attitude” leaves me feeling disappointed when I can’t do it all. But the point is not to do all things, the point is to rely on Christ’s strength for all things.
