Numbers 20:8, 11-12  NASB Take the rod; and you and your brother Aaron assemble the congregation and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it may yield its water. You shall thus bring forth water for them out of the rock and let the congregation and their beasts drink.” Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation and their beasts drank. But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you have not believed Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.”

My son loves to eat, but more and more he wants the food on his own terms. Sometimes he wants to eat, but he doesn’t want to get in his high chair. Sometimes he wants to eat but only if he can pick out the food from the cabinet himself. Sometimes he wants to eat, but not with the spoon and bowl provided, he will pour it out and eat face first directly from the high chair tray. Talk about messy!

Moses and Aaron asked God to provide water once again for the Israelites as they traveled through the desert. God provided, but Moses decided to get the water on his own terms and hit the rock instead of speaking to it like God requested.  He was frustrated with the complaints of the people, most likely. How the water came out of the rock wasn’t that important, but Moses’ obedience was important to God.
