Psalm 119:105 NASB Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

In the modern world, we take light for granted! If we stay up late or get up early, we can flip a switch and have all the light we need. Our smartphones have flashlight apps, so we can always have a light handy. When I’m driving at night, I don’t even need to turn on my headlights; the car senses the dark and does it for me!

But there are times, when the power is out, that we fumble in the dark, looking for batteries for a dead flashlight. Or we’re driving down a country road and the head lights aren’t enough, we have to turn on the brights.

At the time this Psalm was written, they didn’t take light for granted. They had to be prepared with a lamp to light their way, and oil to fuel the lamp. If we want God’s Word to light our way, we have to make the proper preparations. Reading His Word, meditating on it, studying it, memorizing it: so when we are in a dark place, we have the light we need to guide us through!
