Psalm 42:1-3 NASB As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my food day and night, While they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”

I make a point of drinking a lot of water, so I take it with me wherever I go. When I’m running errands I pour a cup to take with me. The other day I ran off and left my cup on the kitchen counter and as soon as I realized it I immediately felt so thirsty! When you don’t know where your next drink is coming from, that’s when you really know what thirst is.

In the NASB, Psalm 42 is titled “Thirsting for God in Trouble and Exile.” This was a deer looking for stream, not a deer that had already found one. This was a man that wanted to be in God’s house, but he was in exile and couldn’t go to the temple.  Let’s not wait until we’re in trouble and exile to discover our need for God’s presence: let Him fill your cup now!
